ATHENS, Ohio- Western Michigan (12-6-1, 0-2 MAC) had a five-game win streak snapped at Ohio, as the Bobcats (11-10, 4-1 MAC) took both games of Saturday's doubleheader in Athens. The Broncos kept things close in game one, falling 2-1, but were outscored 13-2 in the nightcap.
WMU took a 1-0 lead in the first game of the day, when Zach Gentile scored, unearned, in the first inning. The junior second baseman led off the frame with a double and later scored on a throwing error.
The Bobcats evened the score on a pair of doubles in the fourth and used a throwing error and a passed ball in the sixth to plate the winning run.
Bronco starter Ethan Hollingsworth (2-2) gave up seven hits in the loss. He struck out five. Tim Mowry threw an inning of hitless relief. Ohio had seven hits, compared to WMU's six.
Ohio jumped out to a 10-0 lead through the first seven innings and added three in the eighth, defeating Western Michigan 13-2 in game two. The Brown & Gold scored both of its runs in the top of the eighth, courtesy of a Chris Lewis two-run double.
Ohio pounded out 13 hits, while WMU had eight. The Broncos committed one error.
Billy Morrison (2-1) was handed his first loss of the season on the mound, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) in five innings of work. He walked four batters and struck out one.
Lewis led Western Michigan with three hits on the afternoon. Joe Sheets had two hits, both of which were doubles. Kyle Gendron, Grant Simotes, Derek Mosher and Gentile also had a pair of hits on the day.
Western Michigan will look to avoid a three-game sweep in its first Mid-American Conference series, taking on Ohio again on Sunday, at 1 p.m.
