Box Score vs. Stetson
DeLAND, Fla. - Western Michigan was not able to match its offensive output from its first game against Stetson, falling to the Hatters, 6-0, in Friday's night cap at Patricia Wilson Field. The Broncos were out hit, 10-3, en route to the loss but will look to bounce back on Saturday morning against Maine.
WMU allowed its opponent to start off strong for the second game in a row as Stetson opened up a 4-0 lead after two innings of action. The Hatters scored three runs on two hits and a Bronco error in the first and added another run on two hits in the second. Stetson stranded the bases loaded when starting pitcher Meghan Thomas threw out what would have been the second run of the frame at home plate.
The Brown & Gold's three hits came off the bats of Kelli Zache, Molly Mroczek and Amanda Gelder. Zache and Gelder put together back-to-back singles in the fourth inning with one out but the Broncos could not get any runs across the plate. Mroczek's base hit came in the bottom of the seventh.
Zache entered the circle in relief of Thomas after three innings and held the Hatters scoreless the rest of the way. She faced 12 batters, giving up just one walk and scattering two hits, while fanning six.
Western Michigan will start day two of the Stetson Invitational at 11 a.m., against Maine before a rematch with Albany at 1:30 p.m. The Broncos defeated the Great Danes, 10-6, in eight innings earlier on Friday. WMU holds a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series with Maine. Live stats for all of Western Michigan's games during the tournament are available at www.gohatters.com.
