BRADENTON, Fla.- Western Michigan (3-1) rang up 19 hits, outscoring Villanova 20-6 to kick off its 10-game spring trip in Bradenton, Fla. Five players had multi-hit games and every Bronco but one who had an at bat recorded a hit.
Chris Lewis started the barrage for Western Michigan, unloading a two-run homer in the first, his first of the season. The Brown & Gold added a run in the second and broke the game open in the third, scoring six runs on five hits to take a 9-1 lead.
A pitching change silenced WMU briefly in the third and fourth, but the Brown & Gold bats got hot again, scoring multiple runs in each of the final four innings, including a four-run eighth.
Derek Mosher accounted for two runs in the ninth, belting his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field.
Right-handed starter Ethan Hollingsworth (1-0) recorded the win, allowing just two runs on five hits, while striking out six in 5.0 innings. Ross Westdorp threw the sixth, seventh and eighth, surrendering four runs, two earned, on six hits. Drew Mahan closed out the ninth, striking out one.
Lewis led WMU offensively going 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs. Zach Gentile also had four hits, including a double and a triple and drove in two. Mosher (home run, three RBIs) and Joe Sheets (triple, three RBIs) both went 3-for-5 from the plate.
Josh Eidell (0-2) took the loss for Villanova, giving up nine runs on 10 hits in just 2.2 innings pitched. The Wildcats (0-4) were forced to use a total of six pitchers on the day.
Western Michigan continues play at the IMG Sports Complex tomorrow, facing Mid-American Conference opponent Bowling Green at 1 p.m.
