KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan is 3-2 after its first weekend of action athe Kajikawa Classic earlier this month. The Broncos get back into action this weekend at the Stetson Invitational in DeLand, Fla., where they open with Albany, a team WMU has never faced. The Brown & Gold will play four times before the championship/consolation game on March 2.
SAM I AM ? Junior outfielder Samantha Vargocko lit up the Arizona sky with the first multi-home run game of her career against Temple. For her efforts Vargocko was named MAC West Player of the Week.
A LITTLE HISTORY FOR YOU ? Vargocko's two-home run game against the Owls tied the school record for the most bombs in a game. She matched Lynette Nevins and Linda Harrell. Harrall was the last to accomplish the feat in 1979 against Detroit.
DIGGIN' THE LONG BALL ? Last season Western Michigan hit a total of 16 home runs. The Broncos have reached half that total hrough just five games in 2008.
AND SO IT ENDS ? It did not take long for senior catcher Becky Bartosz's consecutive start streak to come to an end. Bartosz did not see action in the season opener against Temple, ending her streak at 140 consecutive games.
TURNING THE TIDE ? In five games at the Kajiakawa Classic, Western Michigan turned five double plays compared to the opposition turning just one against the Brown & Gold.
ON DECK ? Western Michigan has no rest after the Stetson Invitational as the Broncos travel to Atlanta, Ga., for the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech (March 7-9). WMU will open with Minnesota and takes on the host Yellow Jackets on March 8 before entering bracket play.
