Western Michigan Splits Doubleheader With Southern Illinois

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Bronco baseball team took the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with Southern Illinois (1-2), 5-4, to improve to 2-1 on the year. Western Michigan dropped game one in 10 innings, 7-6, but with a victory yesterday, claims the series win on opening weekend.

Matthew Abro went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs in game one and Kyle Gendron went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in game two to lead the Broncos.

Western Michigan rallied from a six-run deficit but fell in 10 innings, 7-6, in game one. The Salukis roughed up started Billy Morrison, scoring four runs in the third and adding two more in the fifth before Morrison was replaced by Michael Klepper.

Abro cracked a two-run homer in the sixth to get the offense started for WMU. Kevan Hess led off the seventh and after some shaky pitching, WMU scored two runs on walks. Max Kelmigian drove in the third run of the frame, pulling the Broncos within one, 6-5.

A sacrifice fly by Grant Simotes tied the game in the ninth, but the Salukis came up with a run in the bottom of the 10th to steal the win.

The Broncos jumped out to a 4-1 lead in game two. Neal Miller hit a solo homer and Gendron smacked an RBI double in the fourth. Gendron repeated with an RBI double in the sixth and the WMU added its fourth run on a Zach Gentile RBI.

Southern Illinois tied the game, 4-4, with three runs on three hits in the seventh, and neither team came up with a run in the eighth, again setting the stage for late inning dramatics. Western Michigan would prevail this time, as Derek Mosher drove in the winning run.

Recording the last four outs, Brian Schutzbach (1-0) earned the win in game two. Mowry (0-1) took the loss in game one, allowing six runs on five hits in 4.0 innings pitched.

The Broncos are back in action next weekend, kicking off its 10-game spring trip in Bradenton, Fla., on Feb. 29.
