Box Score vs. Virginia
TEMPE, Ariz. - Western Michigan finished its vist to the "Land of the Sun" with a 3-0 win over Virginia to close out the Kajikawa Classic held in Tempe, Ariz. Sophomore pitcher Kelli Zache took a no-hitter two outs deep into the seventh inning, earning her first win in the circle this season.
Western Michigan's (3-2) sophomore hurler took to the circle in the Broncos' final game at the Kajikawa Classic and took control, allowing just one hit over seven innings of work in WMU's victory. The lone single came back up the middle with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Virginia (0-5) had another batter reach base on an error. That miscue brought the game-tying run against the Broncos to the plate for the second time in as many games.
Just like the Broncos' 5-3 win over Utah on Saturday night, Western Michigan ended the game and the threat with the next batter popping out to Becky Bartosz at catcher.
Western Michigan's offense came in the second and fifth innings. Samantha Vargocko and Bartosz each scored unearned runs when Molly Mroczek reached on a fielder's choice and then all advanced on a throwing error by the Cavalier catcher.
Freshman Lexi Jager capped the game's scoring with her first-collegiate home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jager's solo shot came with one out, was the only hit of the frame, and only the second base hit for Western Michigan during the game. Mandi Sayres singled through the right side in the bottom of the sixth inning for WMU's second hit of the day.
The Broncos are off for 12 days before traveling to DeLand, Fla., for the Stetson Invitational (Feb. 29-March 2).
