KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan softball team split the season series with Ohio after the Bobcats took a 9-2 decision over the Broncos on Senior Day at Fran Ebert Field. WMU collected four hits in the loss and was held hitless until the first pitch of the fourth inning.
Western Michigan (18-19, 10-8 MAC) fell behind 3-0 before to Ohio (22-26, 9-9 MAC) its offense was able to put a run on the board. In the bottom of the fourth, after the Bobcats had plated their third run in the top half of the inning, Molly Mroczek broke up Michelle Sauter's bid for a no-hitter with a single up the middle on the first pitch she saw.
Mroczek later stole second and then advanced to third base on a base hit from Kristi Strange, who advanced to second base on the throw to give WMU two runners in scoring position. Amanda Heckaman was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Becky Bartosz came through with a single through the right side to score WMU's first run. Strange would later score on a wild pitch to pull to within one run of Ohio.
Lauren Fuller earned a base on balls to load the bases again with only one out but the inning ended with the bases full of Broncos as Albani Shepherd went down swinging and Kyla Sullivan, who suffered the loss in the circle for WMU, flied out to center field.
Ohio busted the game open in the top of the seventh with five runs on five hits, including a Candace Saucedo home run to score a pair.
Mandi Sayres collected her fourth hit of the weekend in a 1-for-3 effort against the Bobcats on Sunday. The sophomore led the Broncos with a .417 average against Akron and Ohio.
Western Michigan will close out the regular season on the road with a doubleheader against Toledo on May 4 and a two-game set at Bowling Green on May 5-6.
