BUFFALO, N.Y. - Western Michigan fell behind by four runs after three innings but scored four unanswered runs in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the score and five more in the eighth to take the victory from Buffalo, 9-4, in eight innings. Lauren Fuller smacked her fourth career home run and first of the season, plating three runs in the third to kickstart the WMU offense.
Becky Bartosz singled and Jenna Stuppy drew a base on balls to set the table for Fuller, who mashed the home run over the center field wall. Fuller finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Broncos (15-17, 7-6 MAC).
Buffalo (3-36, 1-10 MAC) had taken a 4-0 lead after the third inning, all unearned. WMU pulled to within one run off the bat of Fuller and tied the score in the sixth inning. Fuller led off the frame with a base hit up the middle and Amanda Gelder followed with a pinch hit, advancing to second base on the throw and scoring Fuller.
Both teams' bats went quiet over the last inning and a half of regulation but Western Michigan's offense re-emerged in the top of the eighth. Three Broncos scored unearned runs after Sarah Thomas and Fuller led off the inning with base hits. Molly Mroczek singled through the left side later in the inning to score a pair of runs and give WMU the lead for good.
Kristi Strange smacked her 10th double of the season to plate Mandi Sayres, who had reached earlier on an error. Amanda Heckaman collected a base hit to left field to score Strange for the Broncos' ninth and final run of the game.
The Broncos and Bulls take the field at Nan Harvey Stadium again on Sunday for the season series finale. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
