KENT, Ohio - Western Michigan avenged four-straight losses to Kent State, spanning back to the 2005 season, with a 3-1 victory over the Golden Flashes on Friday afternoon at the Kent State Softball Field. Amanda Heckaman and Becky Bartosz had back-to-back jacks to lift WMU in game one.
Western Michigan (14-17, 6-6 MAC) managed four hits during the first game of its double dip at Kent State (22-15, 8-2 MAC) but two of those four hits went yard as the Broncos captured their first win over the Golden Flashes since April 13, 2005.
With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Heckaman and Bartosz provided WMU with all the offense it needed. Heckaman yanked her second home run of the season over the wall to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead and Bartosz did the same one batter later to extend the lead to 2-0.
Bartosz now leads the team with four home runs this season. Prior to 2007, the Gladstone, Mich., native had one career home run in 2005. Heckamand, now with 11 for her career is one shy of tying Erin Malloch (2000-03).
Kyla Sullivan earned her ninth win of the season, working a complete game and allowing just one earned run on four hits and striking out seven.
Mandi Sayres scored the Broncos third and final run in the top of the sixth. Sayres led off the frame with a double and advanced to third when Kristi Strange recorded a bunt for a single. WMU called a double steal with one out and Sayres scored, while Strange advanced to second base.
Kent State's Brittney Robinson registered the program's second-ever perfect game with the Golden Flashes' 8-0 win over WMU in five innings during the night cap. Robinson fanned nine batters.
Western Michigan travels to Buffalo (3-35, 1-9 MAC) on April 21-22. The Bulls are coming off a sweep at the hands of Northern Illinois.
