DeKALB, Ill. - Western Michigan softball came up short against Northern Illinois, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at Mary M. Bell Field. The Broncos collected three hits during the game, while the Huskies were able to capitalize on opportunities to plate six runs in the third inning and earn a season split with WMU.
Western Michigan (13-14, 5-5 MAC) collected three hits in its loss to the Huskies (16-19, 5-5 MAC), which split the season series. Sarah Thomas led off the game with a single to right field but the Broncos were sat down in order until there was one out in the top of the fifth inning. Becky Bartosz stopped the string of 12 batters to not reach base with a base hit to left field.
Between WMU's first and second hit of the game Northern Illinois posted six runs, all coming in the third inning, to take control of the game. The first two batters reached on an error and base hit, respectively. The first run crossed the plate on a ground out and three hits later the Huskies had built a 6-0 lead.
Besides Bartosz's single in the third, Lauren Fuller reached on a walk when she pinch hit for Corey Andrzejewski in the top of the sixth inning and Kristi Strange collected a lead-off base hit to right field in the top of the seventh inning.
The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame is next on the schedule for Western Michigan. The Broncos will travel to the hometown of Amanda Heckaman and Molly Mroczek on April 17 for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
