Brown Defeats Gold at WMU Spring Game, 21-0

Spring Game Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The 2007 Spring Football Season culminated in the annual Brown & Gold game.  The Brown team scored three times on a pair of passes and an option run by Thomas Peregrin to earn the 21-0 victory over the Gold team.  Herb Martin led all receivers with five catches for 118 yards and a juggling act touchdown.

The Brown team began the day on its own 30-yard line and the first drive was a heavy dose of Brandon West.  West carried the ball five times for 12 yards during a drive that was highlighted by a Peregrin to Martin connection for 33 yards to the Gold 18-yard line.  The drive was halted when Andy Dorcely stepped in front of a pass at the nine-yard line and returned it 26 yards to the Gold 35.

Gold went three-and-out on its first possession and Brown needed eight plays to drive 67 yards for its first score, which came on an option run to the left corner of the end zone by Peregrin.  Mike Jones made good on his first of three extra points during the afternoon.  Peregrin ended the day 8-for-16 for 94 yards.

The final four drives of the first half ended with no additional scoring.  Cornelius Robinson finished the first two quarters with a five tackles to lead the Gold squad.

The fourth possession of the third quarter resulted in the Brown squad's second score of the day.  This time it was Tim Hiller who found Martin in the end zone from three yards out.  The ball, possibly intended for Jamarko Simmons, bounced off the receiver and into the waiting arms of Martin for the score.  Hiller, who played for both Brown and Gold squads, ended his day 5-for-8 for 77 yards.

Hiller was 4-for-5 on the drive with completions of 43 and 22 yards to Martin and Simmons, respectively.  Simmons ended the day with five catches for 56 yards for the Brown team.

Brown's third and final score came courtesy of an Anthony Gebhart interception, one of three for the Brown team on the day.  Drew Burdi hit Kelly Martin on two consecutive passes for the score, one from 19 yards out and the second from nine yards away.  Burdi, who also lined up under center for both squads, finished 6-for-10 for 125 yards through the air.

The Gold team also had a pair of picks.  Dorcely had the first and Grant Nemeth had the second, coming in the fourth quarter.  On first-and-10 from the Gold 25-yard line, Nemeth batted the ball to himself and rumbled 36 yards to the Brown 41-yard line.

Defensively, Robinson led all with seven stops and Nick Varcadipane led the Brown squad with six tackles.  Austin Pritchard had five stops, including 4.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, accounting for half of the Brown team's total during the afternoon.

Nate Turner and Scott Gajos each had five tackles for the Gold team, while four more Broncos collected three stops.  E.J. Biggers had an interception during the game and also broke up two additional passes.

Preseason camp for WMU football begins in August as the Broncos prepare for the 2007 season and the season opener at West Virginia.
