CLEARWATER, Fla. - Western Michigan scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull within one run but stranded the tying run at second base in a 3-2 loss to the University of North Carolina on day two of the adidas Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. Kristi Strange led the WMU offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance.
The Tar Heels (18-8) posted a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning when Western Michigan (3-5) was able to put the first crooked number on the scoreboard. Becky Bartosz started the inning by earning a walk and she was followed by Molly Mroczek who reached on a fielder's choice. Strange singled up the middle for the first of her two RBI on the day, scoring Bartosz.
The Bronco bats went quiet until the bottom of the last inning, collecting just one more hit up to that point, a base knock down the left field line by Amanda Heckaman in the fifth inning.
Strange doubled in the bottom of the seventh to score Sarah Thomas, who led off the frame with a single to center field. The senior did not advance past second base as UNC forced the next WMU batter into a ground out to end the game.
Kyla Sullivan (3-3) allowed two earned runs and struck out three batters for the loss. Western Michigan faces tournament host South Florida at 6 p.m.
