DALLAS- Western Michigan (2-3) fell to the host Mustangs at the SMU Hoops For the Cure Tournament at Moody Coliseum Friday night, 86-61. The Brown & Gold will face Drake (2-3) in the consolation game on Saturday, at 6 p.m. ET.
Hot shooting by SMU (3-1), including eight first-half three-pointers, and Bronco turnovers laid the brick work for the loss. The Mustangs opened an 11-5 advantage and continuously built on it, as Western Michigan found itself staring at a 49-24 gap heading into the locker room. WMU gave up 26 points on 17 turnovers in the first half, while SMU shot 50 percent from the floor and even better from behind the arc.
Western Michigan did a better job after halftime, going bucket-for-bucket with the Mustangs, as each team scored 37 points in the second half.
All 12 Broncos scored on the evening, but no one managed to reach double figures. Amanda Parker and Jenny Loney led the team with nine and eight points, respectively. Tiera DeLaHoussaye finished with seven points, seven assists and six rebounds. Ebony Cleary was the team's leading rebounder, grabbing 10 boards, while contributing 6 points.
Arianne Wilson scored her first points in a Bronco jersey, hitting a three-pointer with a little over three minutes remaining.
The Brown & Gold did take away a high point from the game, as it owned the glass, 42-36. The Broncos, however, shot just 36.2 percent from the field.
Janielle Dodds led SMU with 21 points and six rebounds. Katy Cobb added 12 and Jillian Samuels had 10. Combined, the two went 5-for-7 for three's.
Western Michigan will meet Drake for the first time ever in the consolation game Saturday. The 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Champions and NCAA Tournament participants, the Bulldogs fell to Kansas in game one of the of the SMU Hoops For the Cure Tournament, 69-64.
