CLEVELAND - For the second time this season, first since the opening week, Western Michigan has earned multiple Mid-American Conference West Divsion Player of the Week Awards. Dustin Duclo was Co-Defensive Player of the Week, while Mike Jones earned the first Special Teams Player of the Week award of his career.
Duclo led the Bronco defense with 10 tackles against Northern Illinois. It was the second double-digit tackle effort of the season for the Southgate, Mich., native. More importantly, Duclo recovered a pair of fumbles in a game for the first time since the Florida State game on Nov. 18, 2006. Duclo's first fumble recovery came on the third play of the third quarter. The recovery gave the ball to WMU and led to the go-ahead score. His second recovery was on the final play of the game, securing the win.
Jones made 1-of-2 field goals against Northern Illinois but his two pooch punts in the second half were key to WMU's road win. Jones' first-career punt traveled just 21 yards but pinned NIU at its own eight-yard line. His second, a career-long 30 yards, pinned the Huskies at their own three-yard line. These two plays were key in Western Michigan winning the battle for field position and keeping NIU out of WMU's side of the 50-yard line.
Altogether, WMU has earned eight weekly conference awards so far this season and have had at least one honoree in each week except weeks three and four.
