DeLAND, Fla. - Krysten Shumaker fanned nine Marist would-be hitters and gave up just one run on two hits as the Broncos hunted down the Red Foxes, 4-1, in their Stetson Tournament finale. Kristi Strange finished the tourney 9-for-16 with six RBI after going 1-for-3 with two RBI on Sunday.
It was an ominous start for Western Michigan (3-2) as McHugh from Marist (1-4) led off the bottom of the first with a solo shot to right center field. It would be one of only two base hits given up by Shumaker (2-0) during the game. The second year right-hander struck out nine batters in her seven innings of work, recording one walk and and 11 fly outs. Shumaker retired the side in order four times and struck out the first batter of an inning three times in her second complete game of this season.
WMU's offense came from a familiar bat as Strange drove in a pair of runs with a single in the third inning. It was her second multi-RBI game of the tournament. Strange not only finished the Stetson Tournament with the team's second-highest batting average (.563), freshman Lauren Fuller leads with a .571 average, she also registered six doubles.
Western Michigan tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning when Molly Mroczek, pinch-hitting for Amanda McBride, reached on an error by the second baseman, allowing Strange and Fuller to score after reaching on a walk and base hit, respectively.
The Broncos will stay in DeLand, Fla., through Tuesday when they will match up with Stetson again for a double-header, beginning at 4 p.m. Both games can be heard live on the Internet.
