Jose Orozco is entering his third year as an assistant coach for the Western Michigan men’s tennis program after leading the Broncos to back-to-back undefeated Mid-American Conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
Orozco helped the Broncos finish the 2008-09 season with nine wins in a row to win a third consecutive undefeated MAC championship and defeat Toledo in the MAC Tournament finals for the program’s seventh NCAA Tournament appearance.
WMU won its 20th MAC regular season championship in 2007-08 and then won the MAC Tournament for the third year in a row to advance to the sixth NCAA Tournament in school history. The Broncos won the doubles point against No. 16 Michigan for the first NCAA Tournament point in school history and WMU reached 20 wins for only the eighth time ever.
A native of Cali, Colombia, Orozco had a successful four-year playing career for the Brown & Gold. He finished with a 208-98 (.680) record, the third most wins in WMU history. He was named Second Team All-MAC in 2004 and First Team All-MAC in 2005 and 2006. He was the team’s most valuable player in 2005 and helped lead the Broncos to MAC Tournament championships in 2004 and 2006 and the accompanying automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament. WMU also won the MAC regular season championship with Orozco in the lineup in 2004.
Orozco was ranked as high as No. 87 in the country in singles during the fall of his senior year and was ranked nationally in doubles with a couple of different partners throughout his career.
He graduated from WMU with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 2006 after twice being named Academic All-MAC and he is now pursuing a master’s in business administration (MBA). Orozco worked in marketing for Armstrong International in Three Rivers, Mich., and was a tennis pro at the indoor home of WMU, West Hills Athletic Club, before joining the coaching staff.
