Allan Avery begins his fifth season (and second stint) with the Bronco coaching staff, having served as a volunteer goaltending coach since the 2002-03 campaign. In 2006-07, WMU netminder Riley Gill recorded four shutouts en route to earning a spot on the 2007 CCHA All-Rookie Team.
Avery has worked as a traffic crash reconstructionist for the First District Police since January, 2005.
A native of Trenton, Mich., Avery spent a season as a backup goaltender for the Broncos during the 1987-88 season.
Prior to joining the WMU hockey team, Avery was a two-time all-state selection at Trenton High School. His 1986 team won the state title and the 1987 squad ranked third in the state under Bronco Skip Howey.
"We’re excited to have Allan working with our program," says Culhane. "Allan has fit in well as a mentor and teacher, helping our goaltenders grow at their positions."
Avery’s previous coaching experience includes stints with several Detroit area high schools and minor league teams.
Avery lives in Jackson with his wife Beth, who is a graduate of WMU. The Averys have four children: Emily (18), Jessica (16), Brett (13) and Bridget (12).
