Summary:
The Western Michigan University Dance Team Coach leads the Bronco Dance Team program, organizes practices, facilitates recruiting of new members, conducts yearly tryouts, teaches and cleans routines, and supervises the team at all home football games, home men’s and women’s basketball games, home women’s volleyball games and various other events throughout the year.
Responsibilities:
- The WMU Dance Team Coach works with the Athletics Marketing and Fan Engagement Department to enhance the fan experience at Bronco Athletic events and serve as a positive role model for students through ethical and professional conduct.
- Coach and instruct the dance team members, individually or in groups. Teach rules and regulations, game day format, applicable skills, and the use of any necessary equipment.
- Develop pom, jazz, hip hop style, and technical elements of dancers as both individuals and a team unit to create exciting game routines and enhance the team’s national presence.
- Work with the WMU Dance Team during practices, sporting events, etc., and observe dancers to determine individual and team improvement needs.
- Develop a regular weekly practice schedule and organize practice times to provide both individual and team development; Must possess strong cleaning skills for dance routines, the ability to create unique and seamless formations, and must be able to provide choreography as needed.
- As determined annually, an opportunity to attend College Nationals, maintaining a competitive presence in Division 1A. Must be open and have basic fundraising knowledge to help fund costs for national competition. When appropriate, establish detailed strategic plans for success at Dance camp and College Dance Nationals.
- Recruit new students to join the WMU Dance team each year.
- Promote good sportsmanship toward all Spirit Team members, the Bronco Marching Band, staff, officials, and fans.
- Collaborate with the Athletic Department Marketing and Fan Engagement team on gameday preparation.
- Accompany and coach the Dance Team at post-season events as assigned (i.e., Football Bowl Game, Men’s and Women’s basketball tournament).
- Reports to a member of the Athletic Department senior staff member and will be responsible for following set departmental policies and procedure such as, but not limited to budget management, equipment ordering and maintenance, travel logistics. Responsible for adhering to all Department and University policies and procedures, as well as the rules, regulations, bylaws, and interpretations of the Mid-American Conference and the NCAA.
Please note: This is a part-time paid position that will be expected to work up to 30 hours per week, which could include covering events during evenings, weekends, and holiday. Some travel will be required
