Trinidad Mission Diaries - April 30

Trinidad Mission Diaries - April 30

Thursday April 30, 2009

Finally after a long, long day of travel we arrived in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad. We left Third Reformed Church in Kalamazoo at 3 a.m. this morning for Detroit Metro Airport. After a two and a half hour flight to Houston, a three hour lay over and a five hour flight to Trinidad our first day is done. Luckily Trinidad is in the Eastern Time zone! No time change made the trip a bit easier. Still an exhausting first day.

Right off the plane the air is thick and humid. The high was 90 degrees today and is expected to be the same tomorrow. There is quite a difference between what we are accustomed to back in the Midwest. Much like Europe, drivers drive from the right side of the car on the left side of the road. You’d be amazed how tight of spaces our bus driver fit through on our journey from the airport to the compound! Houses are small and right up against the road. Most are poured cement with wooden roofs. Others are make-shift with wooden walls and sheet metal roofs. All houses have barred windows.

The compound where we are staying seems to be the biggest piece of property around. It’s quite nice?pool, basketball court, clean rooms, and a gated, locked fence all around. Jennifer and Javed Bachew greeted us as we arrived to the compound at about 9 p.m. and fed us sandwiches. We then got settled in our rooms (four guys are bunking it in my room!), and had a time of group devotionals and prayer before bed.

Tomorrow we will tour the city, have a time of orientation and preparation, and begin our ministry here on the island by visiting some Hindu temples and meeting the children in the villages we will be doing Vacation Bible School with. Keep us in your prayers throughout the week!

Go Broncos!
