MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Western Michigan cross country team had a strong showing to open the season, finishing second at the Jeff Drenth Memorial this morning. The Brown and Gold had five runners finish among the top 25 in the 5K race.
Central Michigan (25 points) took the top spot, while WMU (50), Eastern Michigan (62), Cornerstone (89) and Alma (174) rounded out the top five.
Kaelin Hughes paced the Broncos, earning fourth place with a time of 18:11.4. Right behind her were
Madison Zarembski and
Rebekah Asselin, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Zarembski crossed the finish line in a time of 18:16.9, while Asselin secured a time of 18:24.7.
Next up was
Larissa McGrath, as she closed strong to finish 12th. She notched a time of 18:41.3 to open the season. Rounding out the scoring lineup was Maidson Clor. She recorded a time of 19:16.5 to finish 23rd in the race. Despite not scoring,
Shannon Gillahan had a great race. She just missed out on a PR, producing a time of 19:45.9 to finish 31st.
"I'm pleased with our effort today," head coach
Kevin Cataldo said. "The first race of the season is about racing hard and getting a feel for being on a cross country course again. We made a few mistakes out there, which is actually a good thing, because we can learn from them. I did see a lot of positive things happen too, which gets me very excited for when we put the full lineup back out there together."

Western Michigan will return to Kalamazoo to host the George Dales Invite on Sept. 18. The meet is slated to begin at 10 a.m. at the Prairies Golf Course.
