KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan softball team completed the home portion of its schedule with a shutout win over the Northern Illinois Huskies to avoid a series sweep.
The Broncos' pitching and defense were lights out on Sunday afternoon, allowing only two hits in a 4-0 shutout of NIU. But Northern Illinois took the series, winning both games of Saturday's doubleheader in the two programs' final regular-season series as conference opponents. Over three games, sophomore outfielder
Rylee O'Brien led WMU at the plate, batting .444 with four hits, including her second triple of the season, and one run scored.
Freshman pitcher
Hannah Potts continued her strong debut season, pitching a team-high 14.0 innings on a 0.50 ERA. Potts had two complete games for the Brown and Gold with a 1-1 record, allowing five hits, one earned run, and five walks while striking out four batters. The right-hander also added her second shutout of 2026 in Western Michigan's 4-0 victory on Sunday.
Game 1
The Huskies got the weekend started in a big way, scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning. NIU's lead grew to three in the top of the third after getting a lead-off triple. Northern Illinois threatened to score more in the frame with the bases loaded. But with two outs already on the board, the Broncos' defense got the putout to strand all three runners.
WMU answered offensively in the bottom of the third, even after starting the half inning with two straight outs. Freshman infielder
Bella Duncan put a solo home run past the left field fence to get the Brown and Gold on the board. That was followed by a stand-up double for infielder
Caitlin Tighe, who scored Western Michigan's second run on an error in the next at-bat.
But the Broncos were held scoreless for the final four innings of the series opener by the Huskies defense. WMU connected on one other hit in the fifth while NIU grew its lead to five with two more hits and an error to take the game 7-2.
Game 2
The Brown and Gold bounced back offensively in the second game of the day, out-hitting Northern Illinois six to three. But Western Michigan only got one run across home plate while the Huskies had two in seven innings. The Broncos put three hits into the field early, but stranded two runners while the third was caught out on a double play.
NIU didn't register a hit until the top of the third. But the lone hit was enough to get Northern Illinois on the board with two runs. WMU's defense gave up two errors in the third for one earned run and the other unearned. The Brown and Gold added three more hits in the fourth and fifth innings but didn't bring a runner home.
Western Michigan's best chance to tie the game came in the final frame of the day. O'Brien led off the inning with a triple, putting the Broncos in position for a sacrifice play. After placing pinch runner
Parker Ostach at third, WMU got the fly out it was looking for as infielder
Hannah Herman put the ball out into mid-right field. But the Huskies' right fielder threw a laser of a ball to home plate, wiping out the Brown and Gold's sacrifice. One more runner got on base for Western Michigan but was stranded in the 2-1 final.
Game 3
On Sunday, the Broncos had their best game of the weekend in the 2026 home finale. WMU's offense, defense, and pitching combined for the team's seventh shutout of the season in the 4-0 final. It was a pitcher's duel early as the first hit of the afternoon didn't come until the bottom of the third.
After three straight innings of taking down NIU's batters in order, the Brown and Gold's offense came alive in the bottom frame. Following a lead-off out, Western Michigan had its next four batters all reach base. In those four at-bats, the Broncos had three hits and a hit by pitch to score three runs for the first lead of the day.
WMU added its insurance run only an inning later after Northern Illinois recorded its first hit of the game. O'Brien found the gap on the right side for a lead-off Brown and Gold hit. She was then quickly at second base as catcher
Tristen Head laid down a sacrifice bunt to third.
O'Brien scored the fourth and final run of the day when right fielder
Megan Malartsik put a hit just past the Huskies' second baseman. Western Michigan's defense was able to finish the job over the final three innings, limiting NIU to a single hit in the 4-0 victory.
