YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up the 2025-26 season with a 5-2 win at Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Western Michigan (13-8, 4-4 MAC) battled hard for the doubles point.
Julia Frazier and
Polina Khotko picked up the first win, 6-2 at No. 3 over Regi Mendez Carreno and Kseniia Saenko. The Eagles tied it up with a 6-4 win at No. 1 by Matilde Parreira and Sabrina Tolstova. The decisive point came down to the No. 2 match between WMU's
Marielou Baudouin and Frieda Weijerman against EMU's Iva Daneva and Zuleyka Hukmasabiyy. The two teams battled to a 6-6 score, with the Broncos coming up with the 7-4 win in the tie-breaking set to go up 1-0.
Weijerman opened up the scoring in singles, defeating Pehal Kharadkar 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. EMU got on the board after Lara Diaz Zayas defeated
Ayana Yaguchi 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 to cut the lead to 2-1. Eastern Michigan tied it up at 2-2 with a win at No. 1 by Hukmasabiyy over
Lola Glantz 6-2, 6-2.
Western Michigan retook the lead thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 against Parreira and then senior
Audrey Smitek earned the match-winning point in her final appearance in the Brown and Gold. Smitek defeated Tolstova 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 to push ahead 4-2. Baudouin then added the fifth and final point with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win over Mendez Carreno at No. 6.
