KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team picked up two more wins on the season, defeating Illinois State and Grand Valley State on Friday afternoon at West Hills Athletic Club.
WMU (3-1) opened the day with a hard-fought 4-3 win over the RedBirds. The Broncos took the doubles point after
Frida Weijerman and
Audrey Smitek picked up a 6-1 win at No. 2 before
Julia Frazier and Sienna Osborn secured the point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
Western Michigan started off singles with a 2-0 lead due to ISU being unable to field a player at No. 6. Illinois State cut the lead to 2-1 after Vittoria Benedetti defeated
Sienna Osborne 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.
Lola Glantz then put the Broncos back up by two after a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lana Caculovic at No. 1. The RedBird cut it down to one again after Silvia Pomarolli beat Weijerman 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. The match was tied at 3-3 after Nuria Sanz bested
Marielou Baudouin 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5. Smitek then won the match for the Broncos with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Nicole Iosio.
Later in the afternoon, Western Michigan bested the Lakers 6-1. WMU rolled to the doubles point after winning all three of the matches. Singles was an absolute battle, with three of the six matches decided in three sets. Frazier put the Broncos up 2-0 quickly after a 6-1, 6-1 win over Amanda Diaz at No. 6. GVSU got on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win by Natasha Sengphrachan at No. 1 against Glantz. Osborne extended the lead to 3-1 after a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Anna Soteras at No. 4. Baudouin clinched the match win after besting Ipek Sakiroglu 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.Â
Smitek and Weijerman then added three-set wins at No. 3 and No. 2 to close out the day.Â
Western Michigan heads on the road next Saturday, taking on Minnesota in DeKalb, Ill.Â
