KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan softball team wrapped up the 2025 season winning its final two games and taking the series from Ohio at Fran Ebert Field on Saturday and Sunday.
The Broncos opened the weekend falling to the Bobcats, 10-4 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. WMU rebounded to win 4-1 in the second game and then defeated OU, 2-1 on Sunday.
GAME 1
Ohio jumped on the Broncos early, scoring three runs in both the top of the first and second innings. OU followed it up with another run in the third and two more in the fourth, putting the Broncos down 9-0.
Payton Kelly hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to get the Broncos on the board and within six.
The Bobcats added another run in the top of the seventh to go up 10-3.
Caitlin Tighe doubled to right field in the bottom of the seventh to score
Megan Malartsik for WMU's fourth and final run.
GAME 2
Ohio got on the board first again in the second game on Saturday, with Emma Hoffner hitting a RBI single to left field in the top of the third. Western Michigan tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when
Micaela Booth grounded out to the shortstop, but scored
Haleigh Smith.
After a scoreless top of the fifth,
Taylor Wolfe led off the bottom half with a single up the middle. Kelly dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Wolfe to second. Tristen head then grounded out to third for the second out of the inning.
Riley Dittmar was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on.
Jordan Smith then singled to left field to load the bases for
Jadeyn Merrill. Merrill belted the first pitch to the left-center field wall to clear the bases and give the Broncos a 4-1 lead.
From there, senior
Jensen Gremillion shut the Bobcats down to finish off the complete game. Gremillion allowed just three hits in the game to pick up her fifth win of the season.
GAME 3
Gremillion got the start in Sunday's season finale and turned in a spectacular performance to end her collegiate career. She recorded another complete game, striking out two batters and allowing just one run.
Ohio struck first in the top of the first when Brenna Farme doubled to right-center to score Cici Keidel. But that was it. Gremillion got the Broncos out of any jam after that to keep the Bobcats off the board for the remainder of the game.
WMU finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jordan Smith singled to right center to score Head and move
Haleigh Smith to third. Tighe then singled to center field to plate Haleigh and give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Lauren Yuhas walked to open the top of the seventh and then stole second base. Keidel flied out to left field for the first out and then WMU opted to intentionally walk Brenna Farmer to make the force out at any base. But that didn't factor, because Gremillion got Hoffner to fly out to shallow center and then Izzie Wilson flied out to left to end the game.
