AKRON, Ohio -- The Western Michigan softball team was swept on the road at Akron over the weekend, falling on Friday 12-3 and then dropping a doubleheader 6-4 and 9-1 on Sunday.

GAME 1
Akron opened the scoring in the second inning, scoring two runs on errors by the Broncos. Payton Kelly got the Broncos on the board in the top of the third on a double to left field, scoring Riley Dittmar to cut Akron's lead to 2-1. The Zips then busted the game wide open with three runs in the bottom of the third, four in the bottom of the fourth and then three more in the bottom of the fifth. Micaela Booth added a RBI single to score Dittmar in the top of the fifth and then scored on a triple by Kelly before the game was after UA added the three.

GAME 2
Stranded runners doomed the Broncos in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Western Michigan left eight runners on base in the close loss.

Akron got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning on a pair of RBI singles. Tristen Head chopped the lead in half with a home run to left field in the top of the fourth, but was countered by a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to push the Zips' lead back to two runs, 3-1. WMU tied it up at 3-3 after two runs in the top of the fifth. Parker Ostach scored on a bunt single by Caitlin Tighe and then Tighe advanced to second on a passed ball during the next at bat. Riley Chumbley hit a single down the right field line to score Tighe to make it 3-3. Akron retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI single to left field.

The Zips pushed their lead to 6-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Dittmar singled with one out in the top of the second and then advanced to second when Head grounded out to the pitcher. Booth walked to put two runners on with two outs. Kelly then drove in Dittmar with a single to left field. Jadeyn Merrill singled to third to load the bases with two outs but Jordan Smith grounded out to the pitcher to leave the bases loaded and end the game.
