BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Western Michigan softball team dropped two of three games at Bowling Green over the weekend, taking the opener 3-1 on Friday, but falling 8-0 and 4-0 in a doubleheader on Saturday.
GAME 1
The Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Ava McKee grounded out with the bases loaded, taking a 1-0 lead. And that was it for Bowling Green. Freshman
Kaylee Salyer had another stellar game on the mound, allowing just two hits and the one run, while pitching another complete game. Salyer also struck out four Falcons in the game.
The Broncos were finally able to get on the board in the top of the 6th inning.
Jordan Smith reached on an error with one out and then
Payton Kelly singled through the right side with two outs.
Analeez Niles walked to load the bases up for freshman infielder
Micaela Booth. Booth singled to center to drive in Smith and Kelly, giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead. Western Michigan added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Niles was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring
Tristen Head. Salyer then got the Falcons to go down in order in the bottom of the seventh for her second win of the season.
GAME 2
Bowling Green jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the bottom of the first and added one in the second, four in the third and one more in the fifth. Western Michigan was limited to just two hits and committed six errors in the 8-0 loss.
GAME 3
BGSU scored first again in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader on a RBI double by Hannah Hunt in the bottom of the first, taking a 1-0 lead. Salyer's pitching kept the Broncos in the game but the Falcons added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. The Broncos were held to four hits, with none of them coming after the fifth inning.
ON THE HORIZON
Western Michigan returns home to host Ball State for a doubleheader on Wednesday, beginning at 1 p.m.
