BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Western Michigan softball team is at Indiana's Hoosier Classic this weekend, taking on IU Indy, IU and UIC on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday's action features the Broncos and the Jaguars at 10 a.m., followed by a game against the Hoosiers at 2 p.m. On Sunday, WMU opens things against the Flames at 10 a.m. and then plays IU Indy again later in the afternoon at 2 p.m. Every game of the Hoosier Classic can be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus. SCOUTING THE FIELD
IU Indy opened the tournament with a 7-1 win over the Flames, snapping a seven-game losing streak. The Jaguars then lost to Indiana, 14-0, in five innings in the afternoon. Junior catcher/infielder Moly Kable has played in and started all 18 games this season for IU Indy and leads the team with a .354 batting average, has two home runs, four doubles, and is tied for the team-lead with 11 RBIs. Freshman Callie Dickerson has 11 RBIs, with one home run, five doubles and a .333 batting average. Freshman Lily Roush has started in a team-high seven games, pitching two complete games with a 1-6 record.
The Hoosiers are 14-5 on the season and picked up the win over the Jaguars and then an 11-3 win over Bowling Green Friday evening. The Hoosier Classic is IU's first action at home this season. Freshman infielder Madalyn Strader leads the team with a .463 batting average and has 15 runs scored. Avery Parker leads the team with 25 RBIs and is tied for the team lead in home runs with four. Parker also has a 1.124 OPS, one of five players on the team with an OPS of at least 1.000. Jenae Berry and Jasmine Reyes have both started seven games this season, with Berry pitching in a team-high 34 innings. Berry has a 7-1 record with three shutouts and 17 total strikeouts.
UIC is 4-17 after losing to IU Indy and the Falcons on Friday. The Flames have lost their last 13 games. Dee Dee Caskey leads the team with a .380 batting average and is team lead with 19 hits. Four different players are tied for the team high with eight RBIs. Redshirt senior Alyssa McIntosh has a team-high 72.2 innings pitched, with a 2-7 record. McIntosh has also pitched six complete games and two shutouts.
STILL, OUCH
With MAC play just a week away,
Riley Chumbley has now moved up to second in the nation in being hit by a pitch, with 10. She is averaging 0.53 per game, which puts her fourth in the nation.
BEST IN THE MAC
Sophomore infielder
Caitlin Tighe sits at the top of the MAC in assists, with 49. It also ranks her 20th in the nation. She's also in the Top 25 in the country in assists per game at 2.58, which goes for third-best in the MAC.
ON THE HORIZON
The Broncos open MAC play next Friday at Toledo at 3 p.m. WMU and UT then have a double-header on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
