KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan women's tennis team went 1-1 over the weekend, falling at Eastern Michigan on Friday before rebounding for the program's first win over Toledo since 2019.
On Friday, Eastern Michigan put the early pressure on the Broncos by taking the doubles point. EMU then extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win by Sabina Bichackova over
Marielou Baudouin at No. 4. Daniella Shved defeated
Christine Gouws, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 to make it 3-0. EMU clinched the match with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win by Marta Komar over WMU's
Julia Frazier at No. 6. The Broncos points came from freshman Frieda Weijerman winning at No. 3,
Lola Glantz winning at No. 1 and
Polina Khotko winning at No. 6, all in three sets.
The Broncos (11-9, 2-3 MAC) rebounded on Sunday with the 4-3 victory over Toledo. WMU's last win over UT came back on April 14, 2019 in Kalamazoo. WMU started off strong by taking the doubles point. Toledo did put the pressure on by winning at No. 1, but shortly after Gouws and Baudouin beat Gabby Rondon and Audrey Moutama at No. 2, 6-2. Then Weijeman and Khotko secured the point with a 6-3 victory over Jone Ibanez and Annika Munson.
Audrey Smitek pushed the Broncos' lead to 2-0 after a 7-5, 6-2 win over Neha Guru at No. 6. Khotko was next off, defeating Catherine Rhegness 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 at No. 5 to make it 3-0. Weijerman then clinched the victory with a 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-0 win over Ibanez at No. 3. The Rockets collected the remaining three points after the match was decided.
The Broncos are back at home on Friday, hosting Ball State at 12 p.m. before traveling to Northern Illinois on Sunday.
