Broncos Hit Eight Home Runs and go 1-3 at the Hoosier Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Western Michigan softball team went 1-3 at the Hoosier Classic at Indiana University over the weekend.

The Broncos hit eight home runs on the weekend.

WMU dropped the first two of its games on Friday, falling to UI Indy 7-2 and to the hosts IU, 11-3. Caitlin Tighe hit a two-run home run against the Jaguars to account for the Broncos' offense in the opening loss. Against the Hoosiers, it was Micaela Booth and Payton Kelly hitting home runs, with Booth hitting a two-run shot and Kelly a solo.

Western Michigan's win came in extra innings against UIC on Sunday. The Broncos scored a run to open the game in the top of the first inning, but the Flames scored four in the bottom to build the early lead.

WMU was able to chip away at the lead, scoring one run in each of the second, third, and fourth innings to tie it up. Kelly singled to drive in Haleigh Smith in the second. Jordan Smith hit a solo home run in the top of the third, and Kelly drove in another run on an RBI single to score Haleigh Smith, again.

UIC added another run in the bottom of the fifth but the Broncos took the lead for the first time in the sixth inning. Riley Dittmar singled through the right side to score Kelly and Booth hit her second home run of the weekend, another two-run shot, to score Dittmar and make it 7-5. UIC added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extras.

In her very next at bat, Booth hit another two-run home run to score Kelly and put the Broncos up 9-7. Shortly after Casey Fazzini singled to center field to score pinch-runner Chelsea Weatherford to push it to 10-7. Fazzini then retook the mound and gave up one run in the bottom of the eight to earn the win. She pitched 7 1/3 innings to pick up her second victory of the season.

The Broncos closed out the weekend with an 8-5 loss to IU Indy. In her third straight at-bat of the day, Booth hit another home run, this time a solo shot to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

The Jaguars scored the next five runs to go up 5-1 heading into the bottom of the third. Jadeyn Merrill hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to score Payton Kelly and the Fazzini singled to center to score Dittmar to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Merrill tied it up in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run. The long-ball was Merrill's first as a Bronco. IU Indy broke the tie in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs and then blanked the Broncos in the bottom of the sixth and the seventh to finish off the game.

Western Michigan opens Mid-American Conference play on Friday at Toledo. First pitch is at 3 p.m. and then the Broncos and the Rockets have a double-header on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
