EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Western Michigan softball team went 2-2 at the 2025 Aces Tournament, hosted by the University of Evansville, on Sunday and Monday.
The Broncos (5-8) split games with the host Aces and UT-Martin.
WMU opened the tournament on Sunday against UE, posting a 9-5 win.
Riley Chumbley accounted for seven of the team's runs, going four-for-four with six RBIs and one run scored. Two of Chumbley's four hits went for extra bases, with a double and a home run. Catcher Tristin Head was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, three runs scored and her first home run as a Bronco.
Casey Fazzini earned her first win as a Bronco after pitching 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
The Aces put up three runs in the first inning, prompting the pitching change to Fazzini but the Broncos got on the board in the top of the second on a two-RBI double by Chumbley. Evansville's Taylor Howe hit a two-run home run to push UE's lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the second. But from there, it was all Broncos. Head scored
Riley Dittmar on a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the third. Chumbley then singled to left field to score pinch-runner
Haleigh Smith to cut the lead to 5-4. IN the top of the fourth, Dittmar singled to right field to drive in a run and tie it up at 5-5. Head's solo home run in the top of the fifth gave the Broncos the lead, 6-5, before Chumbley hit a three-run bomb to left center to push the lead to 9-5 in the top of the seventh.
WMU defeated the Skyhawks, 3-2, in the nightcap.
Kailey O'Connor pitched a complete game, striking out four and allowing just one earned run. Center fielder
Taylor Wolfe did all the damage for the Broncos with two RBIs and a run scored.
UTM took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a RBI groundout by Jordan Hustey. Wolfe grounded out to second base to score
Emily Yacapraro to tie it up in the bottom of the third. She then doubled to right to score Smith and then later in the bottom of the fifth, scored herself on a wild pitch. The Skyhawks put the pressure on in the top of the fifth, scoring on a groundout but O'Connor got the key groundout to end the game.
The Broncos were not so fortunate on Monday morning against UT-Martin, falling 10-0.
WMU then took on the Aces in the afternoon, dropping that game 7-2.
Western Michigan now heads to the University of Florida for the T-Mobile Tournament, beginning on Friday. WMU will take on Troy and Florida A&M on Friday, Florida and Samford on Saturday and then the Trojans again on Sunday morning.
