KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team swept Grand Valley State after wins of 7-0 and 5-2 on Friday afternoon at West Hills Athletic Club.
FIRST MATCH
The Broncos opened in the morning with a tough battle for the doubles point. Senior
Anton Arzhankin and
Drew Evans gave WMU the early advantage with a 6-3 win over Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov at No. 2. GVSU responded with a win at No. 3 by Ignasi Garros and Chimo Minguez in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-5). The doubles point came down to the match at No. 1 between WMU's
Brogan Pierce and
Jack Davison against Grand Valley State's Lucas Gonzalez and Victor Lopez. Pierce and Davison secured the point after a tie-breaker win of 7-6 (7-5).
WMU rolled in singles, with five of the six matches going two sets. Arzahnkin, Pierce,
Oscar Corwin,
Dimitri Moriarty, and
Matej Kajzer all won in two, while Davsion needed a super tie-breaker to pick up his win and set the final at 7-0.
SECOND MATCH
After the tight doubles round in the opening match, the Lakers got their revenge in the second match and took the doubles point after wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Freshman
Alex Antonopoulos tied up the match at 1-1 with a quick 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Sebastion O'Byrne. Arzhankin picked up his second win at No. 1 on the day, going 6-2, 6-1 over Lopes to give WMU a 2-1 lead. The lead expanded to 3-1 when Corwin picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Patricio Sepulveda. The match victory was clinched by Kajzer after he defeated Claassen 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). The Broncos' fifth and final point came from
Ashton Adesoro picking up a 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win.
Western Michigan heads on the road next weekend to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers on Friday night and Drake on Saturday afternoon.
