KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team extended its winning streak to three matches after taking down Northern Illinois, 6-1, at Sorensen Courts on Sunday afternoon.
The win gave the Broncos (13-6, 4-2 MAC) some separation in the standings and sole place of third place in the Mid-American Conference standings.
DOUBLES
The Huskies put the Broncos under pressure early after a 6-0 win at No. 2. Shortly after,
Lindsey Zieglar and
Valeriya Monko earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 over Isabella Righi and Diana Lukyanova to tie things up.
Karin Hamilton and
Polina Khotko secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Anastasia Rakita and Reagan Welch at No. 3.
SINGLES
For the second-straight match, the Broncos rolled through singles. Zieglar earned a quick 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Erika Dimitriev to push the lead to 2-0. Khotko then made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Nataly Ninova. Hamilton then earned the match-winning point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lukyanova.
Audrey Smitek pushed the lead to 5-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jenna Horne, while
Valeriya Monko added WMU's sixth and final pint with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Righi.
UP NEXT
The Broncos are back at home next Friday, hosting Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. WMU then heads to Ball State on Sunday.
