KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team picked up a pair of sweeps in a double-header against Butler and Cornerstone at West Hills Athletic Club on Saturday.
BUTLER MATCH
The Broncos opened the morning hosting the Bulldogs, earning a 7-0 victory. WMU secured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 by
Drew Evans and
Benjamin George, 6-2 over Patrick Joss and Rahulniket Konakanchi, and at No. 3 by
Ferdinand Schlueter and
Adrian Quiros, 7-5 against Nicholas Balthazor and Nicholas Shirley.
Five on the six singles matches were won in two sets. George picked up a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Nicolas Arts at No. 2.
Jackson Boone was the first off the court after a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Konakanchi, while
Ashton Adesoro defeated Joss 6-1, 7-6 (7-2). Kazjer defeated Balthazor, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Quiros earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Arnesh Singh.
Anton Arzhankin needed a super tie-breaker to pick up his victory, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 1 over Alvaro Huete Vadillo.
CORNERSTONE MATCH
The Broncos won all three doubles matches to take the early lead. Arzhankin and Boone were slotted at No. 1 and defeated Santiago Castellanos and Luis Felipe Zurduy, 6-4. Evans and George picked up the win at No. 2, 7-5, over Jaden Bender and Jose Oliva. Schlueter and Quiros picked up their second doubles win of the day after a 6-2 victory against Joaquin Micheloni and Daniel Alfaro.
All singles matches were decided in two sets, with Arzhankin (6-2, 6-2) winning at No. 1, George (6-1, 6-1) winning at No. 2, Kazjer picking up his first career win at No. 3 (6-3, 6-2), Quiros at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2),
Dimitri Moriarty (6-3, 6-1) at No. 5 and Evans (6-3, 6-4) at No. 6.
The Broncos stay at home next weekend for a pair of matches against Illinois State and Dayton. The Broncos and the RedBirds compete on Friday at 3 p.m., while the Flyers come to town for a match on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
