Broncos Fall to Toledo in MAC Tennis Championship

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The two teams split during the regular season and shared the Mid-American Conference Regular-Season Championship, so it was only fitting that Western Michigan and Toledo met for the MAC Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon inside West Hills Athletic Club.

Doubles action would only provide a snapshot of the intensity the match would provide. WMU earned a victory at the No. 3 spot, as Benjamin George and Ferdinand Schlueter collected a 7-5 victory. The other two doubles matches went to tiebreakers, but it was the Rockets that were able to claim the coveted doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles play.

In singles, things heated up, with Peter Kuszynski recording a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Adam Kovac at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. That tied the match at 1-1. Arjun Honnappa put the Broncos in front 2-1, as he posted a 6-1,6-3 win over Marko Galic at No. 4.

Toledo would tie things up, with Matias Olivero downing Fynn Lohse, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5. Moments later, the Rockets pushed ahead 3-2 in the match. Luis Kleinschnitz defeated Jackson Boone, 6-4, 6-4.

The Broncos wouldn't go down without a fight, however. Anton Arzhankin claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 to even the match at 3-3. That left each teams No. 1 players in George and Pawit Sornlaksup as the only ones left on the court.

The two battled in the first set, with Sornlaksup taking an early advantage. In the second set, a tiebreaker was needed to determine if Toledo would claim the title or if a third set would determine the winner. In the end, Sornlaksup would claim the tiebreaker, making the Rockets the 2023 MAC Tournament Champions.

George and Honnappa were named to the MAC All-Tournament Team. Western Michigan finished the season with a 13-10 overall record and 8-2 MAC mark. The Broncos earned their 28th regular-season MAC Championship in program history.
