Box Score KALAMAZOO – The Western Michigan men's tennis team claimed its 28th Mid-American Conference Regular Season Championship after defeating Northern Illinois, 7-0, at home at Sorensen Courts on Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos started off the match earning the doubles point. NIU jumped ahead with a 6-3 win at No. 3 but Peter Kuszynski and Anton Arzhankin tied it up at 1-1 with a 6-4 win at No. 2 over Oliver Valentinsson and Armin Koschtojan. Arjun Honnappa and Fynn Lohse clinched the doulbes point with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 over Mikael Vollbach and Cheng Ent Tsai.
WMU advanced its lead to 2-0 thanks to Kuszynski earning a quick 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 against Vollbach. The lead was pushed to 3-0 after Arzhankin defeated Valentinsson 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Lohse clinched the match and the championship with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Christopher Norlin at No. 5. Honnappa, George and Jackson Boone also added three-set victories to complete the sweep.
The Broncos go for their 16th MAC Tournament Championship next weekend. The MAC Tournament begins next Saturday at Sorensen Courts/West Hills Athletic Club.
