KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan wrapped up the opening day of hosting the 2023 MAC Indoors at West Hills Athletic Club on Friday.
It was an all-doubles day as three brackets competed.Â
FLIGHT 1 RECAP
Senior's
Benjamin George and
Jackson Boone won their opening match, 8-4, over Ball State's Nathaniel Webster and Parris Simmons. The duo then fell to Buffalo's team of Chen Tang and Yu-Shiang Huang in the Semifinals. The pair also dropped the third-place match against Northern Illinois' Mikael Vollbach and Cheng En Tsai.
FLIGHT 2 RECAP
Freshman
Matej Kajzer and junior
Anton Arzhankin teamed up and picked up an early win over Toledo's Poonthong Komolpisut and Charlie Snow, 8-4. They fell to Buffalo's Danils Snaiders and Theodoris Mitsakos in the Semifinals, 8-3. The duo rebounded in their consolation match with an 8-3 win over Ball State's Herran and Smith.Â
Also competing in Flight 2 for the Broncos was the team of senior
Ferdinand Schlueter and freshman
Ashton Adesoro. The pair picked up an 8-5 win to open over Illinois-Chicago's Dam and Iermolov before falling in the Semifinals to NIU's Norlin and Arrastia. The duo also droppe their consolation match to Ball State's Orlando and Hayward.Â
FLIGHT 3 RECAP
WMU's freshman pair of
Dimitri Moriarty and
Drew Evans  opened their day falling to Buffalo's Yuhan Jiang and Michael Malkin. The duo advanced to the consolation final of Flight 3 and earned an 8-3 win over Northern Illinois' Luke Welker and Sam Klein.Â
Freshman
Alvin Altman teamed up with UB's Dhananjay Karthik Athreya and picked up an 8-5 win over Welker and Klein from NIU. They then defeated BSU's Fletcher and Petrovic, 8-4, to advance to the Championship match. The pair ultimately fell to NIU's team of Koschtojan and Berdullas in a tight 8-6 match.Â
Singles action begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, admission is free.Â
