KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Mid-American Conference Champion Western Michigan men's tennis team and head coach
Dave Morin announced the team awards for the 2021-22 season.
Freshman
Anton Arzhankin earned both the Most Valuable Player and the Singles Player of the Year awards. Arzhankin went 23-10 in singles play on the season, including 14-9 in dual matches and 8-2 in MAC Play. He was 5-2 at No. 1 singles and 9-7 at No. 2 in dual matches. The Moscow, Russia, native went on to earn MAC Freshman of the Year, First Team All-MAC and the MAC Tournament MVP.
The Doubles Team of the Year was senior
Peter Kuszynski and sophomore
Joaquin Caballer. The duo went 11-3 in dual matches and 6-0 in MAC play. They earned MAC Doubles Team of the Week twice.
Sophomore
Benjamin George was named the Most Improved Player. He posted a 19-16 overall record in singles play, going 11-8 in dual matches and 5-2 in MAC play. He was also 14-8 in doubles play and was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team after going 2-0 in singles during the team's championship run.
Ferdinand Schlueter earned the Hap Sorensen Coach's Award, voted on by Morin and assistant coach
Stephen Payne. Schlueter posted an 8-8 record in singles on the season, winning his lone match in MAC play. He posted 10 wins in doubles play, including two in the MAC Tournament with
Brogan Pierce at No. 3.
