DEKALB, Ill. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team closed out the 2021-22 season with a 4-3 loss at Northern Illinois on Sunday.
The Broncos (12-12, 3-7 MAC) got off to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles points with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Femke Tjon-A-Joe and
Taylor Smith earned a 6-3 win over Julia Dmitrieva and Reagan Welch at No. 3. After NIU tied it up at 1-1
Lindsey Zieglar and
Kristina Tiraspolsky took down Christy Robinson and Fernanda Naves 7-6 (7-4) in a thriller to lock up the doubles point.
Tjon-a-Joe gave WMU a 2-0 lead after winning her first set over Anastasia Rakita 6-1. Rakita was forced to retire during the second set, handing Tjon-A-Joe a win in her final match. Zieglar defeated Dimitriev 6-2, 6-3 at No. to push the lead to 3-0 but the Huskies won the remaining four singles matches to overtake the Broncos.
