KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan softball fell in the series finale against the visiting Central Michigan Chippewas this afternoon, falling by a final score of 6-0. Today's results move WMU to 17-29 on the season, and 7-13 against Mid-American Conference opponents.
Central Michigan controlled the contest, tallying its first run in the top half of inning number three. The Chippewas (22-20, 13-7 MAC) would add another run in the sixth inning, and exploded for four runs in the top of the game's final frame to seal the deal in their favor.
Sophomore infielder
Cassidy Brendtke finished the day 1-2, doubling over the head of the CMU right-fielder in the bottom half of five. Junior outfielder
Natalie Shuey was 1-3, also doubling an inning prior to Brendtke on the very first pitch of the Bronco half of the frame. Freshman pitcher
Jordan Kavanagh was perfect at the plate, shooting a single into right field in the game's final half-inning.
Senior pitcher
Reily Galloway reached another couple of milestones in today's contest. Galloway entered the ballgame with 393 career K's, and surpassed former Broncos Laura Stewart (2004) and Jennifer Vanover (1999) for fourth all-time in career strikeouts with 396 in the game's initial frame.
Shortly thereafter, in the Central Michigan half of inning number five, Galloway added another accolade, striking out CMU's Sammy Mills to officially earn her 400
th career strikeout. These additional milestones come less than 24 hours after she became the second Bronco ever to throw a perfect game.
Western Michigan will look to dust themselves off on April 29-30 for a weekend series on the road against the Kent State Golden Flashes. The single game on Friday is slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch, while Saturday's two-for-one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. All three games will feature a live stream and scoring.
