EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team wrapped up three days of competition at the 2022 Drobac/Beeman Invitational hosted by Michigan State on Sunday.
DOUBLES RECAP
In the opening round of doubles play the Broncos' duo of
Benjamin George and
Brogan Pierce defeated MSU's team of Saye and Matsuno 6-4. Neither WMU's teams of
Anton Arzhankin and
Peter Kuszynski and George and Pierce picked up wins in the second round of play. George and Pierce defeated Indiana's Saylor and Rogers 6-4 to highlight the third round. Both of WMU's teams won in the fourth round, with Arzhankin and Kuszynski defeating Illinois' Miyoshi and Debrui 6-3, while George and Pierce picked up their third win on the weekend with a win over the Hoosiers' Meier and Basavereddy, 7-5.
SINGLES RESULTS
Both Arzhankin and Kuszynski picked up wins in the opening round of singles action. Arzhankin defeated MSU's Bayliss 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9), while Kuszynski beat the Spartans' Portnoy 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9). Arzhankin continued his winning ways in the second round, defeating Northwestern's Goli 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5). George also picked up his first singles win of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Notre Dame's Ho.
George and Pierce both picked up wins in the third round over competitors from Indiana. George took down Saylor 6-2, 7-6, while Pierce had a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Rogers. Arzhankin picked up WMU's lone win in the fourth round and his third singles win of the weekend after beating Illinois' Miyoshi 6-4, 6-2.
Western Michigan now heads to Illinois State for the Redbird Invitational on Oct. 7-9.
