Men's Tennis Sweeps MAC Weekly Awards, Again

CLEVELAND – For the second week in a row the Western Michigan men's tennis team has swept the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week Awards. Freshman Brogan Pierce has been named MAC Men's Tennis Singles Player of the Week and the duo of freshman Joaquin Caballer and junior Peter Kuszynski have been named MAC Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week.
 
Pierce played in two of WMU's three matches last week. He opened the week with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Pedro Alverez of Chicago State at No. 6, helping the Broncos earn a 7-0 win over CSU. The Batavia, Ill., native was also slotted at No. 6 in Saturday's match at Notre Dame. Pierce defeated UND's Andrew Mariados 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 as the Broncos' lone winner in singles against the Fighting Irish. With his week he has improved to 7-0 in singles play this season.
 
Caballer and Kuszynski were paired up in all three of WMU's matches last week, going 3-0 in doubles play. The pair opened up with a 6-4 win at No. 3 against Chicago State in WMU's 7-0 win. They moved up to No. 2 against Illinois-Chicago and won 6-2 and WMU's win over UIC. On Saturday they clinched the doubles point for the Broncos at No. 3 against Notre Dame, winning 6-4. The duo is 5-1 on the season and have won their last five doubles matches.
 
Western Michigan is off this weekend before host Wayne State University next Wednesday for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
