KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team's duo of Anton Arzhankin and Fynn Lohse won flight one of the doubles tournament as the Broncos wrapped up hosting the first two days of the 2012 Mid-American Conference Indoors at West Hills Athletic Club.
Arzhankin and Loshe opened up the tournament beating Toledo's Shoults and Somlaksup 8-3. In the second round they bested Binghamton's Pergel and Verma, 8-6. Also competing in Flight 1 was WMU's Peter Kuszynski and Ferdinand Schlueter. They earned a win over Ball State's De Negri and Kovacevic 8-6 and then defeated Northern Illinois team of Malinen and Spolidorio 8-7 (4). Instead of having the two WMU teams play each other in the championship, they each played the other's semifinal opponent. Unfortunately, both Bronco teams lost but Arzhankin and Lohse won the flight on tie-breakers.
Western Michigan's Jackson Boone competed in Flight 3 with Toledo's Kryzstof Wetoszka and the two won the flight. They opened with a win over Ball State's Petrovic and NIU's Knutson, 8-2. In the semifinals they defeated Binghamton's Ben Ari and Crawford 8-6 before dispatching of BSU's Herran and Wojtalik 8-6 in the championship.
Saturday's action was the opening two rounds of singles play. In Flight 1 Arzhankin opened up defeating Dan Pergel from Binghmaton 6-3, 6-0 before beating Toledo's Sawit Sornlaksup 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the championship. In the championship he will be playing his teammate Kuszysnki. Kuszynski opened up the flight with win over Bufalo's Cheng Tang 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. He then took on Northern Illinois' Kris Ortega in the semifinals, winning 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Arjun Honnappa earned a win in Flight 2 against NIU's Mikko Malinen 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 but fell in the semifinals to Toledo's Adam Kovac 4-6, 6-4, 4-6. Benjamin George advanced to the championship of Flight 3 after opening with a win over Buffalo's Finn Macnamara, 7-6, 6-0 and Mikael Vollbach of Northern Illinois in the semifinals, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2). Also in Flight 3 was Joaquin Caballer. The sophomore lost his opening match to Victor Spolidorio from NIU 2-6, 2-6, but won against Toledo's Wojciech Szczesny, 7-5, 7-6 (2) in the consolation bracket.
Boone and Brogan Pierce will meet in the championship of Flight 4 after each winning two matches, while Schlueter advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket in Flight 5.
The MAC Indoors comes to its conclusion on Sunday.
