Softball Concludes Spring Break Invitational with Penn State Matchup

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Western Michigan softball team fell 3-0 to Penn State on the final day of the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational. The Broncos complete the tournament with a 2-3 record, moving to 5-16 on the season.

Western Michigan had three hits in Sunday's contest, a pair from senior Mackenzie Swinehart, and a double from Samantha Coffel in the second inning.

Penn State went up by two runs in the top of the first. Wih runners on second and third base, the Nittany Lions got a runner home with a sacrifice fly and brought in another with a base hit.

Western Michigan's best scoring chance came in the bottom of the second. Coffel doubled down the right field line and Swinehart delivered a bunt single. Penn State shut down the next two batters to keep the Broncos off the board.

The Nittany Lions added another run in the top of the third, advancing Kaitlin Morrison home off a ground-rule double from Kathryn Rex to wrap up the 3-0 decision.

Junior pitcher Reily Galloway took the loss with four innings in the circle, surrendering three runs off seven hits. Freshman Autumn Godwin came in for the next two frames and allowed just one hit. Junior Sydney Stefanick threw the final inning, striking out one.

The Broncos play in a pair of doubleheaders in Dayton, Ohio, next weekend. They face off against Dayton on Saturday, March 14, and Wright State University on Sunday, March 15.
