LONGWOOD, Fla.- The Western Michigan softball completed their run at The Spring Games on Sunday, March 1, dropping a 4-3 decision to Florida International University.
Western Michigan went up in the second inning with an RBI single from
Courtney Farrish. The freshman catcher brought in
Mackenzie Swinehart, on base from a single. They added to the board in the second as
Alyssa Kramer had a base hit, advanced by Swinehart and brought around to home plate after an error at third base.
FIU got on the board in the bottom of the second after a one-run single with a runner on base hit by a pitch.
Sydney Stefanick hit her second home run of the season in the fifth inning, a solo shot to center field to make things 3-1 with a WMU advantage.
The Panthers took over in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run shot from Jocelyn Alonso to tie things up at 3-3. FIU had a batter walked in the sixth and brought home with a double by Alexis John for the 4-3 final.
Stefanick, Farrish and Swinehart each had two of Western Michigan's eight hits in the game, Stefanick with an RBI from her solo home run and Swinehart racking up a single, a stolen base, and a run in the second inning. Kramer and
Samantha Coffel each had a hit.
Stefanick took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs on eight hits one walk over five innings. The junior pitcher threw three strikeouts in her ninth appearance this season. Freshman
Autumn Godwin took over for the final inning, facing two batters.
Western Michigan (3-11) will take a two-day break before returning to action on Tuesday. The Broncos play a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure in Madiera Beach, Fla., before continuing their spring break trip with an appearance at the Clearwater Invitational.
