Box Score East Lansing, Mich. - Western Michigan men's tennis fell just short of victory at Michigan State on Friday evening, as the Spartans defeated the Broncos by a final score of 4-3 in East Lansing.
At No. 1 doubles, the senior duo of
Jannik Opitz and
Kennosuke Nouchi won convincingly over Anthony Pero and John Carlin, 6-0. The Spartans prevailed in the other two matches to take the doubles point, with Josh Mukherjee and Kazuki Matsuno defeating freshmen
Arjun Honnappa and
Rodrigo Crespo in a tie-break to clinch the early 1-0 advantage.
Opitz, along with sophomore
Jack Randall, both won their singles matches in straight sets to give the Broncos their first lead of the night at 2-1. Michigan State would fight back to regain the one point advantage, following victories at No. 3 and No. 6 singles.
Reigning MAC Singles Player of the Week
Peter Kuszynski earned his third consecutive win to tie the contest at 3-3. The Ontario native did so in comeback fashion after dropping the first set to Carson Gates.
The Spartans secured the victory when Mukherjee beat Crespo at No. 4 singles in a three-set battle (7-6, 4-6, 6-1).
Western Michigan will face #16 UCLA on Tuesday in Chicago, Ill., for a neutral site match at 1 p.m. ET.
