WMU Announces 2019 Athletics Hall of Fame Class

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and the WMU Hall of Fame Committee have announced the class of 2019 – Shawn Faulkner (football), David Gennero (men's tennis), Frederika Girsang (women's tennis), Bill Horn (ice hockey), Shaylen Jackson (volleyball) and Jeff Zylstra (men's track & field/cross country).

The 2019 WMU Athletic Hall of Fame induction and banquet will be held on Friday, Sept. 27 at the Fetzer Center. The event begins with a 5:30 p.m. social, followed by the induction and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Individual tickets are available for $40 Registration is available at www.wmuevents.com. Inductees will then also be honored the following day on Saturday, Sept. 28, during halftime of Western Michigan football's game against Central Michigan.

Shawn Faulkner
Football - Running Back, 1980-84
Port Huron, Mich.

- Selected First Team All-MAC in 1983 and Second Team All-MAC in 1982
- Fifth all-time in program history in career rushing yards with 3,327
- Set, and still holds, the single-season record for rushing yards in a season with 1,668 in 1983, also finishing second in the nation with 154.0 yards rushing per game and third in all-purpose yards per game at 172.6
- Fourth all-time in program history in career rushing attempts with 761
- Averaged 4.37 yards per carry in his career

David Gennero
Men's Tennis, 1993-96  
Warren, Mich.

- Named MAC Player of the Year in 1996
- Two time MAC Indoors Singles Champion (1995, 1996)
- Three-time All-MAC selection
- Sits 13th all time (fourth at time of graduation) on the all-time wins list with 180

Frederika Girsang
Women's Tennis, 2000-04
Jakarta, Indonesia

- Named MAC Player of the Year in 2003, becoming the first in program history to earn the honors
- Three-time First Team All-MAC Selection (2001, 2003, 2004) and earned Second Team All-MAC honors in 2002
- Named MAC Freshman of the Year in 2003
- Achieved the highest singles ranking in program history at #62 (9/4/2003)
- Set program record with 195 wins and now sits fifth all-time in program history

Bill Horn
Ice Hockey - Goalie, 1985-89
Regina, Saskatchewan

- AHCA Second Team All-American in 1985-86
- Second Team All-CCHA in 1986-87 and two-time All-CCHA Honorable Mention selection
- Named CCHA Tournament MVP after helping lead WMU to the program's first CCHA Tournament Championship in 1986
- Winningest goalie in WMU history with 71 career victories, also holding the single-season record for wins in a season with 25 (1985-86)
- Holds program record for minutes played in net with 7933:28
- Single-season winning percentage record holder at .833 (1985-86)

Shaylen Jackson
Volleyball - Middle Blocker, 2002-05
Kalamazoo, Mich.

- First Team All-MAC selection as a middle blocker in 2004 and 2005, also earning Honorable Mention in 2003 and MAC All-Freshman Team honors in 2002
- Earned American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Mid-West Region Honorable Mention in 2005
- Holds program record for total career blocks with 563 and career block assists with 459
- Holds program record for career blocks per set with 1.25
- Third all-time in career attack percentage at .332
- Seventh all-time in program history in points with 1,635.5
-  Member of WMU Volleyball All-Decade Team (2004-2013)
- Also earned three varsity letters with the WMU women's basketball team

Jeff Zylstra
Men's Track & Field/Cross Country, 1975-79
Grandville, Mich.

- MAC Champion in the 10k and steeplechase in 1978 and was named MAC Championship Outstanding Performer
- Repeated as MAC Champion in the steeplechase in 1979
- Member of the 1977 MAC Cross Country Championship team
- Qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 1978 and 1979, making the finals in 1979
- Finished in second place in the steeplechase at the 1979 Penn Relays with the second-best time in program history at 8:42.6
