Rockets take two from Broncos in Series Opening Doubleheader

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Western Michigan softball team opened is road series at the University of Toledo Friday afternoon with a pair of losses to the Rockets, falling 1-0 and 8-4 to fall to 7-9 in the Mid-American Conference.

Despite the Broncos and Rockets tallying 13 total hits through two games, the home team limited WMU to just a couple hits in the series opener while nine Bronco runners were left on base in game two.

Erin Hunt tossed a complete game shutout for the Rockets as she allowed just two Bronco base hits, both to Jenna Faultersack

Toledo scored early with the eventual game-winning run scored unearned in the first frame.

After Faultersack recorded WMU's first hit of the game with a single in the second inning, Hunt and the Rocket defense held the Bronco hitless until the seventh. Faultersack notched her second hit of the game with a two-out double and was pinch ran for by Emma Nuyen, who advanced to third on a passed ball prior to a half-hour rain delay. Hunt then struck out Skyler Sobeski to end the game.

The Brown & Gold registered 11 hits compared to nine from the Rockets in game two, but stranded nine baserunners while Toledo picked up six extra-base hits, including two home runs.

Toledo once again scored early, putting up five runs in the first followed by one in the second and third to take a 6-1 lead.

WMU pushed across two runs in the fifth with runs batted in from Faultersack and Kaylen Glenfield to trim the Rocket lead to four, but the home team answered with a run in the bottom half and held on in the final two innings.

Faultersack and Maggie Kehoe each tallied two hits, a career-high for the freshman Kehoe. Sydney Stefanick suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle.
