KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan men's tennis team is set for a trio of weekend matches, facing Northern Illinois University on the road Friday, March 29 prior to hosting its final non-conference matches of 2019 versus the University of Dayton and the University of Indianapolis.Â
Friday's match at NIU is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. (ET) in Rockford, Ill. The Broncos host Dayton at 10 a.m. and UIndy at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.Â
LAST TIME OUT
Western Michigan improved to 4-0 in the Mid-American Conference last weekend with a pair of wins at home, defeating Buffalo 4-3 and Binghamton 7-0.Â
KUSZYNSKI & RANDALL NAMED MAC DOUBLES OF THE WEEK
WMU's No. 1 doubles pair of Kuszynski and Randall helped guide the Broncos to a pair of wins at home versus Buffalo and Binghamton as Western Michigan improved to 4-0 in the MAC. The freshman duo defeated reigning MAC Doubles Team of the Week Ethan Nitttolo & Hao Sheng Koay from Buffalo 6-4 to clinch the doubles point during the 4-3 win over Buffalo and were leading 5-3 over Binghamton's Alejandro Pena/Ludovico Cestarollo while WMU sealed the doubles point on court two and three in the 7-0 victory. The honor stands as the second of the year for Kuszynski and Randall, as the pair opened the year receiving the doubles award Jan. 16. It also marked the fourth MAC weekly honor for the Broncos.Â
ABOUT NIU
Northern Illinois earned its first win in the MAC last Thursday, defeating Binghamton 6-1 to improve to 9-9 overall and 1-2 in the MAC. The Huskies opened conference play with a 7-0 loss against Western Michigan March 16 in Muncie, Ind. Â
ABOUT DAYTON
The Flyers are 13-5 overall and are currently riding a three-match winning streak, including a pair of wins last weekend at home versus Fordham and Duquesne. Last season, the then-ranked No. 25 Broncos downed Dayton 5-2 in Kalamazoo.Â
ABOUT UINDY
The Greyhounds rank No. 20 in ITA's Division II rankings, with an 8-4 overall record and are unbeaten on the road at 5-0. UIndy made it to the Division II national semifinals last year, earning its first two NCAA Tournament wins in program history.Â
REIGNING MAC CHAMPIONS
Last season, the Broncos finished 7-0 in the MAC while winning both the conference regular season title and the MAC Tournament Championship, the program's 24th regular season title and 12th MAC Tournament title. Western Michigan was one of 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament with 20+ wins and rode an 11-match winning streak into the 64-team championship. WMU had its season end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 4-1 against No. 25-ranked Notre Dame.
