Broncos Face the Irish on the road Wednesday

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan softball team is set for another road non-conference contest on Wednesday, March 27, heading to the University of Notre Dame for a 5:30 p.m. game from Melissa Cook Stadium.

LAST TIME OUT
In their first time following the 13-game Florida trip, the Broncos fell 3-0 last Tuesday at the No. 25-ranked University of Michigan. Wolverine starting pitcher Meghan Beaubien went the distance in the pitcher's circle and limited WMU to four hits along with 13 strikeouts. Brooke Wyman led the Brown & Gold with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

ABOUT THE BRONCOS
Western Michigan closed out its 13-game spring trip at the University of South Florida in Clearwater, Fla. with three-straight wins, capped off by a 6-5 win over UMass prior to the loss at Michigan. WMU opened the season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., going 0-5 against tough competition.

The Broncos are paced by junior Mackenzie Swinehart and sophomore Sydney Stefanick. Swinehart leads the team with 22 hits and a .344 batting average, followed by a team-high 18 RBI and five home runs from Stefanick. Stefanick also leads WMU pitching staff with a 2.08 ERA (4th/MAC) in 57.1 innings pitched. 

SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday's game will mark the 36th all-time meeting between Western Michigan and Notre Dame, with the Irish owning a 29-6 series advantage. Notre Dame has prevailed in the previous six matchups, as the Broncos are searching for their first win over the Irish since a 3-2 victory in 2011. The two teams last faced each other in 2017 as Notre Dame won 6-5 with a walk-off in Notre Dame, Ind. 

SCOUTING NOTRE DAME
The Fighting Irish received votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll and are coming off an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) series versus Louisville over the weekend, going 2-1. After taking a pair of 9-1 wins during the series opening doubleheader on Saturday, Louisville took the series finale 5-3 as Notre Dame's overall record moved to 18-10 on the season. 

BRONCOS OPEN MAC PLAY AT AKRON
Western Michigan begins Mid-American Conference competition this weekend in Akron, Ohio March 29-30 at the University of Akron. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. The Broncos took two of three games from the Zips last year in Kalamazoo.
