KALAMAZOO, Mich.– The Western Michigan softball team and head coach Kathy Leitke announced the hiring of Rachael Knapp as a new assistant coach on Monday, December 30.

Originally from Saint Joseph, Michigan, Knapp comes to Kalamazoo from overseas, where she was a starting pitcher for Haarlem Roef in the Dutch Golden League in Holland. She graduated from Central Michigan University in 2017 and was a four-year member of their softball team, named to the All-MAC First Team and the MAC Pitcher of the Year her senior season.

"I'm very excited to have Rachael joining our Bronco staff," Leitke said. "She brings a great deal of successful playing experience and knowledge of MAC and regional competition. Rachael has been a proven winner at this level along with the professional/international level. Her ability to pitch along with her young energy, excitement and love of the game is something that I look to be a big addition to our staff."

Knapp joins the coaching staff and team for the Broncos' upcoming 2020 season. In 2019, the Brown & Gold scored 218 runs on 353 hits, 57 doubles, and 28 home runs to end their season 18-28, 9-11 in the Mid-American Conference. Heading into the MAC Tournament ranked No. 8, the Broncos lost in a double elimination game to Northern Illinois University to conclude their season.

Her responsibilities as an assistant coach will include working with players on live drills, the mental approach of the game, and reviewing film in preparation for opponents. She will work with volunteer coach Andy VandenBerg on pitching, as well as recruiting in the off-season.
